What is a Rekey Service?
Your home locks have little pins inside them that work together with your house key. When we rekey a lock, we remove and replace your pins with a different combination of pins that match up to a completely different key. When we repin the lock, all of your locks and hardware remain the same, just a few little pieces inside are replaced.
When the locks are all rekeyed and service is complete, you get a pair of new keys and your old keys no longer work in the locks. This eliminates any issue if you had lost your house key or if you someone has a copy of your house key that you would rather did not. It is vital to get your home rekey done promptly if you suspect someone untrustworthy has your house key.
Why install new locks on your home, when you can have the locks rekeyed for a fraction of the price. Hire a licensed locksmith that you can trust. Don’t put your house keys and your security in just anyone’s hands.
Getting your new home rekeyed is one of the first things you should do when you buy a house – whether it’s brand new or previously loved.
When a house is built, the general contractor (and possibly subcontractors) have a key to the house. A set of keys is given to the new homeowner at closing. In addition to the homeowner’s set, there is no telling how many copies of that house key are floating around. That’s why, when you buy a house, we always recommend a prompt rekey. Better safe than sorry.
Even if you’re not buying a brand new house, the previous owner almost certainly has a spare key or two somewhere they may not even realize they have. In addition to the keys they gave family members, close friends, housekeepers, dog walkers, and the list goes on. That’s why, when you buy a house, we always recommend a prompt rekey. Better safe than sorry.
How Long Does Rekeying Take?
A standard rekey usually takes an average of 10 to 15 minutes per door. Most doors have two locks on them – the deadbolt and the doorknob. This time estimate includes removal, repinning, and reinstallation of the door lock.
Types of Locks We Rekey
Most commonly, we rekey deadbolts and doorknobs. Deadbolts have a large metal lever (called the bolt) that comes out and secures your door when you turn your key. Deadbolts offer the most security of any lock on your home.
Doorknobs, on the other hand, have a small latch that is fixed in place when you turn your key to the lock position. Unfortunately, doorknobs are more easily bypassed than deadbolts, so they offer less security.
Business Rekey Services
We provide business and commercial rekey services, as well. From front door locks to panic bars to storefront security gates , we do it all. We can even build you a custom master key system in a scenario such that many different doors require separate keys, but one key is also needed to open them all. Our licensed locksmith has over 10 years experience in commercial and residential locksmithing and can build you an accurate quote.
Beware of Quotes That Are Too Good to Be True
Recently we’ve heard about super low quotes for rekeying service given by unlicensed locksmiths. Our 12 years of experience has taught us that you get what you pay for, especially in the security industry. Your security is worth investing in. A quote that seems to be too good to be true usually is; don’t give an untrustworthy person control of your keys and the locks on your home or business.
